Abstract

Fillers and/or oil extenders are worked into elastomers obtained by polymerization of monoolefins with/without polyolefins using co-ordination (Ziegler) catalysts, by adding the filler and/or extender to the crude elastomer solution in inert diluent resulting from the polymerization, and then separating the compounded elastomer. The elastomer may be derived from ethylene, propylene, butylene and/or butadiene, isoprene or trivinyl hexene, and the fillers/extenders specified are carbon black, silicates and high boiling hydrocarbons obtained in the refining/distillation of petroleums. Inert diluents disclosed are aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The compounded elastomer may be recovered by dispersing the filler/extender/elastomer solution in water, which may contain a dispersing agent or emulsifier, steam distilling off the diluent, optionally blowing air into the aqueous dispersion, and then coagulating if necessary to obtain the product.
