Abstract
915,915. Feeding webs. BIBBY & BARON Ltd. Sept. 18, 1961 [Nov. 28, 1960], No. 40769/60. Class 100 (1). Apparatus for winding and unwinding continuous webs comprises a reel shell supported by a reel bar 1 carried in swinging arms, one of which incorporates a shaft 4 for rotating the reel bar, and means whereby the rotation of the shaft can be caused to operate further means for transferring the reel bar longitudinally to move it out of or into the reel shell which is resting on a temporary support. The other swinging arm allows the reel bar to turn and slide freely. The swinging arm 2 shown in Fig. 1 incorporates the shaft 4 in its hollow centre. The shaft 4 for rotating the reel bar 1 drives a sleeve 8 via a pinion 6 and a crown-wheel 7. A key 9 slidable in a key-way 10 ensures that the bar 1 rotates with the shell 8, but allows it to slide longitudinally therein. The sleeve 8 carries a spindle 11 on which are fixed a worm 12 engaging a rack 13 on the bar 1, and a pinion 14 meshing with a ring 15 of internal teeth on a member 16 mounted on a bearing 17 on the sleeve 8. The member 16 normally rotates with the shell 8 but can be arrested by a brake band 18 surrounding it which is operated by a solenoid 19, Fig. 2 (not shown). When the member 16 is arrested, its teeth 15 drive the pinion 14 and the worm 12 which causes the bar 1 to travel longitudinally in the shell 8 and to move out of or into the reel shell (not illustrated) according to the direction of rotation of the shaft 4.
