915,648. Drawing wire. AJAX MANUFACTURING CO. July 21, 1961 [July 28, 1960], No. 26484/61. Class 83 (4). A wire drawing apparatus comprises first and second drawing units in tandem, each unit comprising frame means, a slide reciprocable in said frame and carrying a die, a grip to prevent backward movement of the wire, a swingable lever acting against each slide to move it away from the gripper, actuating means for the levers, wheel means between the units having said wire at least partially wrapped thereon and driving means for said wheel. A wire 11 from a supply coil 13 passes through a first drawing unit 16, round a wheel 62, over a fair-lead 96 through a second drawing unit 17 and then to a feed-roll device 22 which feeds the drawn wire to a fabricating machine, such as a cold-header. The drawing unit 16 includes a die 19 mounted in a slide 40 which runs in a guideway 29 and is actuated by a bell-crank 42, and a wedge-type gripper 38. The working stroke of the die is in a direction away from the gripper. The drawing unit 17 includes a die 20, a slide 41 moving in a guideway 30 and a gripper 39. The slide 41 is operated by a lever 43 which is connected at its lower end to a drag link 26 connected to the fabricating machine. The bell-crank 42 which operates the first drawing unit is connected by a link 52 to a lever 53 which is secured to the shaft 51 to which the lever 43 is keyed. The effective length of the arm 42a is such that the working stroke of the first die is about 80% of the stroke of the second die. The return movement of the dies is produced by the forward movement of the wire, and in the case of the second slide 41, is assisted by a spring 56. The wheel 62 is mounted on a spindle 61 and is driven by a motor 77 through a variable speed gear 79 at a speed which is at least as great as the speed at which the drawn wire is advanced by the feed roll device 22. There is a deep peripheral groove 65 in the wheel so that the wire 11a does not kink or leave the groove owing to the elongation of the wire between the drawing units as the second die 20 makes its working stroke. The slide 41 is provided with a lubricant chamber 86 of conventional design (Fig. 3 not shown) and the slide 40 has a lubricant chamber 85 with a bottom discharge opening 88 closed by a screw plug 89. The die 19 is housed in a recess 91 and is separated from the chamber 85 by a partition 92 having an opening 93 through which a limited supply of lubricant is supplied to the die orifice. The die is retained by a cover-plate 94 which also forms a thrust plate for the lever 42. In a modification, the two drawing units are in line and the wire makes a complete turn round the wheel 62.
