Abstract
A method of making a resinous powder which is stable at room temperature and has an initial flowout at 300 DEG F. of 1,5 to 5 inches comprises mixing a 1:2-epoxy resin averaging more than one 1:2-epoxy group per molecule and a room-temperature-solid latent heat activatible epoxy reactive hardener in inter-reactive proportions, the mixing being conducted at a temperature for a time just sufficient to provide a homogeneous fusible mixture without converting the mixture to a thermoset infusible state, cooling the mixture to room temperature, and then converting the solid product to particles having a size within the range of 40 to 325 mesh U.S. standard sieve. The mixture may also contain amine type catalytic hardeners and flow inhibiting fillers. The examples describe the manufacture of powder from an epoxide resin derived from bisphenol-A and epichlorhydrin and:- (1) chlorendic anhydride and dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bentonite; (2) isophthalyl dihydrazide, a boron trifluoride-ethylamine complex, dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium bentonite, iron oxide and mica and (3) phthalic anhydride, the resultant particles being coated with 2:4:6-tri(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol.
