Abstract
Pyridoxamine or its dihydrochloride is obtained by hydrogenating a Schiff's base of pyridoxal in the presence of a precious metal catalyst. The Schiff's base may be produced by reacting pyridoxal or the hydroxy sulphonic acid of pyridoxal with an amine in aqueous solution have a pH of 8 to 9. In examples, pyridoxylidene - benzylamine or pyridoxal phenylhydrazone is dissolved in water and shaken with palladium charcoal and hydrogenated. The catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is acidified with hydrochloric acid, concentrated and cooled to separate off pyridoxamine dihydrochloride.
