Abstract
A method of fixing an inorganic or organic colouring or matting pigment on fibrous materials or foils and for imparting an p antistatic finish thereto comprises treating the material with a padding liquor or printing paste containing the pigment and a water-soluble condensation product of formaldehyde, ethylene oxide or a compound containing polyethylene glycol radicals and melamine or an aliphatic bis-urea of the general formula <FORM:0915420/IV(a)/1> in which n is zero or an integer from 1 to 3, R represents a lower alkylene radical and R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, which condensation product contains from 50 to about 97% by weight of polyethylene glycol radicals, and heating the materials thus treated to harden the condensation product. To the paste or liquor there may be added one or more of: a dispersion of an artificial resin, a plasticizer, a hardening catalyst, a wetting agent, a dispersing agent or a thickening agent. The artificial resin may be a homo- or copolymer based on one or more of the monomers: a vinyl ester, an acrylic ester, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butyladiene, acrylonitrile, and isobutylene, or may be a polyvinyl acetal derived from a polyvinyl alcohol and an aldehyde in the presence of an acid condensation catalyst and, if desired, a dispersing agent, the acetalation and dispersion being carried out in a single operation (as in Specification 895,428). Specified additives include reaction products of ethylene oxide with fatty acids, fatty alcohols, fatty acid amides or alkylnaphthols; alginates; mucilages; locust bean flour; dextrine; cellulose ether carboxylic acid; white spirit emulsions; and, as catalysts, ammonium nitrate or chloride. In examples the condensates are obtained by reacting (1) polyethylene glycol dibenzene sulphonyl ester with bis-(ureido-propyl)-methylamine and condensing the quaternary product with formaldehyde; (2) hydroxyethylated triethanolamine, formaldehyde, melamine and sulphuric acid, followed by methylation with methyl sulphate; (6) melamine and the reaction product of formaldehyde with hydroxyethylated triethanolamine which has been methylated with dimethyl sulphate. Artificial resins mentioned, in addition to those of Specification 895,428, are copolymers of (5) butadiene and acrylonitrile, (7) ethyl acrylate, vinyl isobutyl ether, styrene and acrylic acid, and also polyvinyl acetal. Specification 818,844 also is referred to.ALSO:A method of fixing an inorganic or organic colouring or matting pigment on fibrous materials or foils and for imparting an antistatic finish thereto comprises treating the material with a padding liquor or printing paste containing the pigment and a watersoluble condensation product of formaldehyde, ethylene oxide or a compound containing polyethylene glycol radicals and melamine or an aliphatic bis-urea of the general formula <FORM:0915420/IV (b)/1> in which n is zero or an integer from 1 to 3, R represents a lower alkylene radical and R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, which condensation product contains from 50 to 97% by weight of polyethylene glycol radicals, and heating the material thus treated to harden the condensation product. To the paste or liquor there may be added one or more of: a dispersion of an artificial resin, a plasticizer, a hardening catalyst, a wetting agent, a dispersing agent or a thickening agent. The artificial resin may be a homoor copolymer based on one or more of the monomers: a vinyl ester, an acrylic ester, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile and isobutylene or may be a polyvinyl acetal prepared as described in Specification 895,428. Specified additives include reaction products of ethylene oxide with fatty acids, fatty alcohols, fatty acid amides or alkyl-naphthols; alginates; mucilages; locust bean flour; dextrine; cellulose ether carboxylic acid; white spirit emulsions; and, as catalysts, ammonium nitrate or chloride. The materials to be treated may be foils, fibres or textile materials made therefrom, such as natural or regenerated cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, superpolyamides, polyolefins, polyesters, glass or asbestos fibres, shaped structures of acetyl cellulose or artificial leather. Artificial resins mentioned, in addition to those of Specification 895,428, are copolymers of (5) butadiene and acrylonitrile, (7) ethyl acrylate, vinyl isobutyl ether, styrene and acrylic acid; and also polyvinyl acetal. Specification 818,844 also is referred to.
