A machine for making handles from a strip of paper and applying them to paper bags comprises a cylinder 58 to which a length of strip with the edges folded in and stuck is supplied from an oscillating holder 55 and gripped at its central region by a gripper 59 or 60, folding means 69, 70 for folding the end portions of the strip backwards at right angles to the central grip portion so that the folds are above the central grip portion, and a second cylinder 73 rotating in the opposite direction to the cylinder 58 which takes over the handle so that the folds are below the central grip portion. The ends are gummed at 79 and stuck to bags supplied to a belt 84 and fed to the cylinder 73 by devices 86, 87. Handles for the other sides of the bags are formed and applied by identical mechanism. A strip 23 of crepe paper is drawn by feed rollers 21, 22 from a spool 24 and runs through smoothing mechanism 25, 26 which flattens out the creping at the handle end portions, mechanism 27, 28, 29 for applying adhesive along its margins, mechanism 30 for folding over these margins thus doubling the strip's thickness and a 'grooving mechanism 31, 32 which forms grooves extending diagonally from the edges, on each side of the strip for the corner folds. The strip then passes through a cutting mechanism 33, 34 which does not completely sever it but leaves two thin webs between each successive handle length, and through feed rollers 35, 36 and 37, 38 the latter being segmental and rotating at a relatively higher peripheral speed so that it separates the leading handle length from the following one. The handle now passes under pairs of rollers 39, 46 and is halted by a detent 47 when the upper roller of each pair is raised; while stationary, the handle is penetrated by needles 48, 49, 50, see Fig. 13, arranged to perform a swinging movement (as arrow 57) by which it is transferred to the cylinder 58 and gripped thereon by grippers 59 or 60, its centre being located over folder pincers 61 or 62 which fold this portion double when these pincers coincide, during the cylinder's rotation, with a rotating folder knife 64, and the handle is then released from the grippers. Further mechanisms bend back the side portions of the handle, aligning the folds precisely; the handle, now being turned about, has adhesive applied and on meeting the bags being conveyed below the cylinder 73 and above the cylinder 80, adhesion of the handles to both sides of the bag is effected simultaneously, and the finished article is conveyed to a stack 81. In a modification, the handles are reinforced with bast bands which are introduced into the strip from a separate supply spool. Cover sheets may be stuck over the ends of the handles and on to the bag bottoms.
