Abstract

915,321. Turbidometers. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 1, 1960], No. 7153/60. Class 97 (3). [Also in Groups XXIX and XL (b)] Apparatus sensitive to suspended matter in a plurality of fluid samples comprises two tubes through which light is directed to photo-cells and a valve supplying said samples and a neutral fluid to one of said tubes in turn. Light from a source 8, Fig. 2, reflected by mirrors 7, 7<SP>1</SP> through averaging and sample tubes 3, 3<SP>1</SP> impinges upon a silicon or vacuum photo-cell 4, 41. Pipes 29 connect a rotary control valve 24 (see Group XXIX) to various points in a diesel engine which are to be monitored for oil mists. The rotor 30 of valve 24 has positions in which pipes 29 are connected in turn to the sample tube via pipe 23<SP>1</SP>, the remaining pipes 29 all communicating with the averaging tube 3. A motor 13 serves to step the rotor 30 on through a Geneva cross mechanism and to draw the various gases through the tubes which are provided with sleeves 5, 6 to prevent deposition on the windows 18. The outputs of cells 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are connected differentially to a meter 33, the pointer of which loses a contact to give an audible or visual warning. The apparatus compares the oil mist density in each sample with the mean of the samples and so gives an alarm only when one sample is different from the rest. If different parts of the engine are expected to have different mist densities, valves may be included in pipes 29 to equalize them. In a further position of rotor 30, clean air is connected to tube 3<SP>1</SP> and all the samples are connected to tube 3 for measuring an absolute density. In a calibration position of rotor 30, all samples are connected to both tubes and the angle of mirror 7<SP>1</SP> is adjusted until the output of the cells is equal. The meter 33 must have different sensitivities for the various functions and this is achieved by varying its shunt resistors by cam-operated switches, Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown). In a modification for detecting smoke in diesel exhausts, the averaging tube is replaced by a closed tube 113, Fig. 10, having a vane 170 rotatable in conjunction with a Ringlemann scale 173. Vane 170 is either set to a maximum smoke value, and the difference in output used to actuate an alarm or it is adjusted to reduce the difference to zero, the position on the scale then indicating the smoke density. The Provisional Specification also discloses the use of a selenium cell in place of the silicon cell. Specification 915,322 is referred to.
