A tool for making wood spirals 3 to form the centre core of blockboard comprises a blade 1, a backing plate 4 adjustable to and from the cutting edge of the blade and a nose member 6 secured to the base 7 of the tool ahead of the blade by a screw 8. To vary the tightness of the spiral, the plate 4 can be adjusted relative to the cutting edge or the nose member can be replaced by another of different thickness or having a thickened or roughened portion 9 or 10.
