Abstract

914,923. Pipe couplings. DUFFIELD, F. R. May 30, 1961, No: 19523/61. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXVI]. A coupling comprises a tubular deformable retaining member 17 having moulded therein a plurality of hard spherical shaped gripping elements 18 of substantially uniform diameter spaced around a radial plane, at least a portion of the external surface of the member 17 being of frusto-conical shape, a member 14 of tapering bore, and a further member 10 adapted to receive a tube 15 and threadably engaged with the member 14. The retaining member 17 is compressed upon the tube on screwing the member 14 on to the member 10 so that the gripping elements 18 are forced against the outer surface of the tube and the inner surface of the member 14. The gripping elements 18 may be of hardened ground steel, brass, hard rubber, hard plastic or ceramic and the retaining member 17 is preferably of rubber or plastic. In another embodiment the retaining member 17 is provided with a stepped shoulder adapted to fit into a corresponding stepped shoulder in the member 10.
