Abstract
Equipment that is exposed to ionizing radiation is lubricated with an oil that is derived from an extract obtained from a crude petroleum vacuum distillate or a deasphalted vacuum residue by means of a solvent, for example, furfural, which preferentially extracts aromatic hydrocarbons from mixtures with non-aromatic hydrocarbons. The extract may be at least partially dewaxed, for example by conventional dewaxing techniques such as methyl ethyl ketone/toluene, ethyl chloride/methyl chloride, or propane dewaxing. The extract or dewaxed extract may further have its aromatic content reduced, for example by chromatographic methods employing alumina or silica gel. The oil may be thickened to a grease with an inorganic or other non-soap thickener, for example of the silica or bentonite type, or sodium terephthalate or an aryl substituted urea.
