Abstract

A nickel oxide-rich nickel spinel useful for the reformation of hydrocarbons is made by mixing NiO and calcined Al2O3 in proportions such that from 5-10% by weight of excess NiO over that required to form the spinel NiAl2O4 is present, and subsequently firing the mixture. If desired from 0,25-1% by weight of B2O3 may be incorporated with the mixture before firing. Firing is preferably effected between 1300 DEG and 1500 DEG C. Examples describe the making of NiO-rich NiAl2O4 spherical catalyst particles in which B2O3 and cellulose sulphite lye are incorporated before firing. According to the Provisional Specification catalysts consisting of NiO supported on ZnAl2O4, NiCr2O4, ZnCr2O4, 2ZnO.TiO2, or 2ZnO.SnO2 are also effective hydrocarbon reforming catalysts.
