Abstract

A composition suitable for dewatering sands encountered in oil-well drilling is obtained by adding to mineral oil condensation products obtained by the interaction of a polyhexamethylene polyamine with an alkylene oxide and a monocarboxylic organic acid (see Group IV(b)).ALSO:The invention comprises condensation products obtained by the interaction of a polyhexamethylene polyamine (PHPA) as hereinafter defined with an alkylene oxide (AO) and a monocarboxylic organic acid as hereinafter defined, said products having the formula:-(1) PHPA.nAO.mAc or (2) PHPA.nAc.mAO, in which n and m are integers such that n + m is equal to or less than b, b representing the number of hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen atoms of the molecule of polyhexamethylene polyamine, and Ac represents the acyl radicals derived from the monocarboxylic organic acid with loss of water, and wherein formula (1) represents the mixture of products obtained by the addition of n moles of alkylene oxide to one mole of polyhexamethylene polyamine at elevated temperatures followed by reaction with m moles of the monocarboxylic organic acid at elevated temperatures with elimination of m moles of water, and formula (2) represents the mixture of products obtained by the reaction of n moles of a monocarboxylic organic acid with one mole of the polyhexamethylene polyamine at elevated temperatures with elimination of n moles of water followed by the addition of m moles of alkylene oxide at elevated temperatures. The polyhexamethylene polyamine (PHPA) is defined as NH2[(CH2)6NH]a(CH2)6NH2, where a is from 1 to 6, and is exemplified by bis(hexamethylene)triamine and tris(hexamethylene)tetramine. The polyhexamethylene polyamine may also be used in admixture with other polyamines, provided that these are present in minor amount. The monocarboxylic organic acid is defined as any saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid of the aliphatic or cycloaliphatic series, and is exemplified by stearic, oleic, linoleic and abietic acids, or by mixtures thereof as obtained by the saponification of natural resins or rosins. Suitable alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, or mixtures thereof. The products may be added to bitumen or to lubricating oils, the latter then being used for dewatering sands encountered in oil-well drilling.ALSO:Bitumen intended for coating roadstone is admixed with condensation products obtained by the interaction of a polyhexamethylene polyamine (PHPA) as hereinafter defined with an alkylene oxide (AO) and a monocarboxylic organic acid as hereinafter defined, said products having the formula:- (1) PHPA n AO m Ac or (2) PHPA. n Ac. m AO in which n and m are integers such that n + m is equal to or less than b, b representing the number of hydrogen atoms attached to the nitrogen atoms of the molecule of polyhexamethylene polyamine, and Ac represents the acyl radicals derived from the monocarboxylic organic acid with loss of water, and wherein formula (1) represents the mixture of products obtained by the addition of n moles of alkylene oxide to one mole of polyhexamethylene polyamine at elevated temperatures followed by reaction with m moles of the monocarboxylic organic acid at elevated temperatures with elimination of m moles of water, and formula (2) represents the mixture of products obtained by the reaction of n moles of a monocarboxylic organic acid with one mole of the polyhexamethylene polyamine at elevated temperatures with elimination of n moles of water followed by the addition of m moles of alkylene oxide at elevated temperatures. The polyhexamethylene polyamine (PHPA) is defined as NH2 [(CH2)6 NH] a (CH2)6 NH2 where a is from 1 to 6, and this polyamine may also be used in admixture with minor amounts of other polyamines. The monocarboxylic organic acid is defined as any saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid of the aliphatic or cycloaliphatic series.
