As each of a succession of articles is fed on to an endless belt conveyer provided with a plurality of discharge stations, a signal is recorded on a disc or roller which is provided with a layer of magnetic material and which is rotated in synchronism with the conveyer, and a scanning head is associated with each discharge station to actuate discharge means when an appropriate signal is detected on the disc or roller. Each scanning head comprises a Hall generator and a voltage relay so that if a signal on the disc or roller is of a magnetic intensity which produces a Hall voltage in the scanning head corresponding to a pre-set value in the voltage relay, the corresponding discharge device will be actuated. The different magnetic intensities on the disc or roller are obtained by supplying currents of different intensity to a recording head as the articles are fed on to the conveyer in accordance with the desired discharge stations; A device is provided upstream of the recording head to cancel previous signals on the disc or roller, which is geared to rotate through less than 360 degrees while an article on the conveyer travels from the delivery station to the most distant discharge station.
