Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise about 6085% by weight of a complex ester of the type monohydric alcohol-dibasic acid-glycol-dibasic acid-monohydric alcohol wherein the glycol is neopentyl glycol, the alcohol is 2,2,4-trimethylpentanol-1 and the acid is sebacic acid, azelaic acid or mixtures of the same, and about 15-40% by weight of a diester of the type monohydric alcohol-dibasic acid-monohydric alcohol. The esters may be present in such proportions that the composition has a maximum viscosity of 13,000 cs. at -40 DEG F. and a minimum viscosity of 7,5 cs. at 210 DEG F. The components of the diester are preferably also 2,2,4-trimethyl-pentanol-1 and sebacic and/or azelaic acids but di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate and diisooctyl azelate are also specified. The compositions are prepared by blending. Oxidation, e.g. phenothiazine and foam inhibitors, e.g. silicones may be present. Similar compositions containing a similar complex ester but prepared from 2,2-dimethylpentanol-1 are also prepared.ALSO:The invention comprises a complex ester of the type monohydric alcohol-dibasic acid-glycol-dibasic acid-monohydric alcohol wherein the glycol is neopentyl glycol, the monohydric alcohol is 2,2,4-trimethyl-pentanol-1 and the dibasic acid is sebacic acid, azelaic acid, or mixtures of the same. They are prepared by conventional one- or two-stage esterification procedures preferably in the presence of a catalyst and solvent or water-entrainer, specified catalysts include glycol titanates, HCl, H2SO4, NaHSO4, sulphonic acids, H3PO4, HBr, HF, dihydroxyfluoboric acid, SOCl2, BF3 and SiF4. The product may be "capped", filtered, and stripped. Similar esters but using 2,2-dimethyl-pentanol-1 are also prepared and also the simple diesters from 2,2,4 - trimethyl- and 2,2 - dimethylpentanol-1 and sebacic or azelaic acids. The products are useful in lubricating compositions (Group III).
