Abstract

A process of priming metals comprises applying thereto a condensation product of a phenolcarboxylic acid or phenoxyacetic acid, which acid may be substituted by one or more alkyl, alkoxy or halogen substituents, and chloral or formaldehyde. In making the condensation product, additional phenols or phenol derivatives may be co-condensed with the acid and aldehyde. The condensate may be applied in solution, suspension or as a paste, or may be converted to its alkali metal or ammonium salt form and applied in aqueous solution. Specified metals are iron, zinc, brass, bronze and copper. The examples describe the preparation of condensates from two or more of salicylic acid, cresotic acid; nitrophenol, anisole, phenoxyethylchloride, p-nonyl phenol; formaldehyde and chloral as well as coating compositions containing these condensates and such ingredients as water, ethyl alcohol, butanol, ethylene glycol, toluene; polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl butyral. The compositions may be applied by brushing. Top coats such as oil paint, alkyd/melamine resin-based stoving enamel and nitroalkydal lacquer are mentioned and may be applied by spraying.ALSO:Condensation products of phenol-carboxylic acids or phenoxy-acetic acid, which acids may be substituted by one or more alkyl, alkoxy or halogen substituents, and chloral or formaldehyde are used as such for priming metals (see Group III). Additional phenols or phenol derivatives may be co-condensed with the acid and aldehyde and there are specified a phenol ether, a chlorophenol, a nitrophenol, an alkyl phenol, an aryl phenol, an aralkyl phenol or an ethylene oxide addition product of one of these compounds. The examples describe the preparation of condensation products from (1) nitrophenol, salicyclic acid and formaldehyde, (2) salicyclic acid, formaldehyde and the diphenyl methane derivative formed from anisole and formaldehyde, (3) phenoxy ethyl chloride, formaldehyde and salicyclic or cresotic acid, (4) as in (3) but with p-nonyl phenol replacing the phenoxy-ethyl chloride and (5) chloral and o-hydroxy-benzoic acid. The products may be used in solution in, for example, alcohol or, in salt form, in aqueous solution; suspensions and pastes are also mentioned. Aqueous solutions may be mixed with polyvinyl acetate dispersions; an aqueous solution of the ammonium salt of the condensate prepared in Example 4 is mixed with a polyvinyl acetate dispersion. The product of Example 3 is mixed with polyvinyl butyral, butanol, ethyl alcohol, water, ethylene glycol and toluene.
