Abstract

5-Aryloxymethyl-2-oxazolidinones of the formula:- <FORM:0912947/IV (b)/1> in which Ar represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group free from a substituent or substituents which would render the compound too toxic if administered at a therapeutically effective rate are prepared by reacting a urethane H2NCOOR, in which R is a lower alkyl group, with a 3-aryloxy-1,2-epoxypropane at a temperature in the range 140-180 DEG C. and in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, being lithium or a lithium base or a tertiary amine or a betaine, e.g. lithium amide, lithium hydroxide, triethylene diamine, betaine and tetramethylguanidine. Examples detail the preparation of 5-aryloxymethyl-2-oxazolidinones, including those in which the aryl group is an alkyl-, alkoxy- or halo-substituted phenyl radical. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 834,968 and 838,759.
