Abstract

912,654. Sensing record cards. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 23, 1959 [Sept. 23, 1958], No. 30430/58. Class 106 (1). Relates to the sensing by photo-electric means of binary data stored as opaque and transparent portions in a two-dimensional array on a medium. According to the invention a selected portion of the array is sensed by an arrangement comprising light polarizing and analyzing filter means interposed between a light source and the medium. In the embodiments Kerr cells are used. In one arrangement parallel light is passed through polarizing filter A to emerge plane polarized at 45 degrees to the vertical ; thence through a set of parallel cells B forming the column selector, a first analyzing filter C, a further set of cells D forming the row selector, and a second analyzing filter E to photographic data storage plate F. In another arrangement the column and row selectors are made from complete plates of material, Fig. 3 (not shown).
