Abstract

1,184,820. Sensing records. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [2 Nov., 1967], No. 49773/67. Heading G4M. A card or tape 16 is fed between contrarotating members including a core 3 carrying discs 5, and is sensed by a row of photo-cells 14 receiving light from information recorded on the card or tape 16 along the line of contact with discs 5. Core 3 may be transparent, acting to focus light from source 15 on to photo-cells 14, or it may be opaque, the light source and a focusing or light guiding system being disposed, Fig. 4 (not shown), along an axis which is oblique to record 16. Core 3 may alternatively have a reflective surface and be illuminated from the side to reflect light through holes in record 16 on to the photo-cells 14. The record rotating member may be a reflective drum or, as shown a core 4 carrying discs 6. More than two discs may be provided on the cores, and photo-cells 14 may be arranged in pairs on teeth of a comblike structure extending between the discs. Opaque or reflective rods may be included in core 3 to provide timing signals.
