Abstract

912,344. Measuring displacement electrically. LANCASHIRE DYNAMO ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS Ltd. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1958], No. 35607/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] To signal the position of a shaft 6 an eccentric ferromagnetic rotor 3 attached thereto is used to unbalance the current in a four-phase stator winding 2 so that an A.C. voltage exists between star point 5 of the winding and neutral N of the supply, and the phase angle between this voltage and a given reference is a measure of the angular position of the shaft. In addition, the rotor as a whole may be displaceable radially from the axis of the stator, Fig. 4 (not shown), when the magnitude of the unbalance voltage is a measure of such displacement. A system is described in which the output of the device is compared with a control signal and any difference in phase produces a voltage which operates a servomotor to position a tool to which the device is coupled. It is stated that the device may also be used for thyratron or ignitron control and, where the rotor is also radially displaceable, it may comprise a tracing head in a copying machine. Specification 770,645 is referred to.
