Abstract
912,069. Electropolishing. CHARLESWORTH, P. A. Jan. 17, 1959, No. 1790/59. Class 41. In a method of electropolishing metals the workpiece to be polished is immersed in an electrolyte and is maintained during such immersion in contact with an electrode without relative movement between the workpiece and the said electrode, and relative motion is brought about between the workpiece and at least one electrode of opposite polarity not in contact with the workpiece and of substantially smaller surface area than that of the workpiece, whereby a small area of the workpiece is polished at a time. As shown, a continuous strip A (Fig. 1) is in contact with the surface of a rotating drum H part of which is immersed in electrolyte in tank B. The drum acts as anode; a curved cathode C is provided. In an alternative form of apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown) for treating sheets of metal the drum is replaced by an arcuate sector to which the sheet may be attached. In other embodiments the workpiece may be stationary, the cathode being moved. Means may be provided for heating or cooling the electrolyte and for agitating it.
