Abstract
911,940. Winding and reeling. BLAW-KNOX ACO. ug. 4, 1961 [Aug. 9, 1960], No. 28381/61. Class 83 (4). Belt wrapping apparatus for coiling sheet material on a rotatable mandrel to form a coil comprises a belt adapted to partially encircle said mandrel during the coiling operation and means to support the belt in contact with a coil formed on said mandrel so that the total length of belt in contact with the coil increases as the coil diameter substantially increases. Strip S fed over a pivoted table 9 is wrapped around a rotated mandrel 1 by belts 3 and 4 running over idler rolls carried on arms pivoted in housings 5, 6 which are moved by hydraulic means to positions adjacent the mandrel 1. The belt 3 passes over idler rolls 21, 23 on opposite ends of a lever 18, pivoted at 16 to the housing 5 and urged by spring means 38 which tend to move the roll 19 towards the mandrel 1, and over idler rolls 43, 45 on opposite ends of a lever 41 pivoted at 17 to the housing 5 and urged by spring means 63 (not shown). The rolls 23, 45 are spring-mounted in their levers 18, 41 and the belt is tensioned by a spring-urged roll 65. Stop means limit the inward movement of the levers 18, 41. The belt 4 passes over a similar arrangement of rolls on levers pivoted in the housing 6. As a coil builds up on the mandrel 1 the levers 18, 41 pivot, moving the rolls 21, 43 apart so that the length of belt 3 contacting the coil between the rolls 21, 43 increases with increasing coil diameter. Preferably also the included angle A of belt contact increases with increasing coil chambers. The belt 4 similarly contacts the coil over an increasing length. When the coil reaches a predetermined size a member 81 on the arm 18 actuates a switch 83 to stop rotation of the mandrel. The front end of the table 9 rests on the coil and rises as the coil diameter increases. The belts may be ridged and the rolls centrally grooved to engage the ridge. A plurality of belts arranged side by side may be used. The apparatus may coil successive short lengths cut from the tail or leading end of coiled strip.
