Abstract

Tetrafluoroethylene is prepared by pyrolysing bromodifluoromethane at a temperature between 500 and 1000 DEG C., the bromotrifluoromethane being exposed to said temperature for less than 1 second, preferably for 0.01 to 0.5 seconds. The temperature is preferably increased during the contact time. The gas stream containing the products is preferably quenched to below 500 DEG C. An inert diluent may be used. Other products include difluoromethane, bromotetrafluoroethane, dibromodifluoromethane, bromohexafluoropropane and dibromotetrafluoroethane. Specification 581,405 is referred to.
