Abstract
<PICT:0910986/III/1> In the catalytic hydrogenative treatment of a hydrocarbon oil containing unsaturated hydrocarbons and having a final boiling point of not more than 250 DEG C., the oil to be treated, which may have been heated to a temperature not exceeding 300 DEG C., is mixed with a hydrogen-containing gas of such a temperature and in such a quantity that the final mixture has a temperature of from 150 DEG to 300 DEG C. and contains 200-2000 cu. metres (N.T.P.) of hydrogen-containing gas per ton of hydrocarbon oil, freeing the mixture from any liquid still present by passing it through one or more cyclones, heating the mixture to reaction temperature and introducing it into the reaction zone for catalytic hydrogenative treatment. The oil may have a bromine number of at least 20 and a maleic anhydride number of at least 25. Preferably the hydrogen containing gas is initially at not more than 400 DEG C., and at least 95% of the hydrocarbon enters the cyclone in vapour form. In the drawing, oil to be treated enters via line 1 and passes through heat exchanger 2, after which it is mixed with hydrogen containing gas from line 3, and passes into cyclone 5, where unevaporated components are separated and removed via line 6, and the vapour phase is passed through pipe still 8, where it is brought to the reaction temperature, to reactor vessel 10 containing catalyst beds 11-11111. The effluent passes via heat exchanger 2 and cooler 13 to a gas-liquid separater 14, the hydrogen containing gas being recycled via line 3, and the treated oil is withdrawn via line 19, some if desired being passed to the beds 11-11111 to act as coolant. Suitable catalysts include acidic catalysts containing one or more sulphides, selenides, tellurides or more sulphides, selenides, tellurides or arsenides of the metals of the left-hand column of Group VI and/or one or more metals of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, for example on a silia-alumina carrier. Cobalt molybdate is also suitable as a catalyst.
