A grilling-oven comprises a frame 20 displaceable in a housing 10 and containing two substantially horizontal food-holding grids 30, 31 with electric heating elements 60, 61 parallel to and respectively above and below the grids. At the opposite ends of grids 30, 31 are respectively tangs 34, 35 and pins 38, 39. Pin 39 and tang 35 engage in channels at the top of rear and front uprights 45, 46 secured to carrier 44 and forming frame 20. A column 47, spring biased downwardly, slides on upright 45 guided by pins and carrying a tongue 51 with a bearing to receive pin 38. The front oven wall 40 is attached to handle tang 33 and the lower heating element is carried on frame 20 which has wheels 43 running on slightly sloping rails 12 in housing 1. As frame 20 runs out of housing 10, grid 30 is either lifted by a pair of guides 70 or by a pair of hooks 72 (one of each is shown respectively on the left and right in Fig. 1) which engage pins 71 on the grid. Element 60 is adjustable for example by being mounted on a frame 120 suspended by links 121 pivoted to bell-crank levers 122 connected by a bar 125 and operated by a lever 126. Frame 120 may be latched in position. The frame 20 may be held in the housing 10 by a spring-biased coupling pin 130 mounted on the carriage and having a conical head 134 with a shoulder 135 which engages a catch in the housing 10. This catch comprises a pivoted arm 137 and a yoke 139 forming a window 40 with upper and lower offset edges 141, 142. The edge 141 engages pin 130 until the time switch 81 is set and the solenoid operating arm 137 is energized when edge 142 engages head 135. When the preset broiling time has elapsed, the latch 137, 139 drops and carriage 20 is released to roll out of the housing. Alternatively, the catch may comprise an apertured bowed member. The broiling time may be calculated from the thickness of the food as indicated on scale 74 by tang 34 of handle 32. In operation, the thermostat is switched in by switch 82 and set by switch 83, and the grids 30, 31 are preheated. Frame 20 is pulled out of the housing, the meat is placed between the grids and the cooking time is read off scale 74. Time switch 81 is set, the thermostat being cut out, and after the set time the frame 20 is released and runs out of housing 10. Whenever frame 20 is outside the housing and elements 60, 61 are receiving full current, a further switch is operated to cut or diminish the current supply to elements 60, 61.
