Abstract

909,932. Polymer/rubber compositions. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Dec. 22, 1960, No. 44068/60. Classes 2(6) and 70 The impact strength of a polymer of a monovinyl-aromatic compound is improved by blending and heat-treating in admixture with a natural or synthetic rubber and an inert filler on which is adsorbed an organic free-radical polymerization initiator which effects crosslinking of the rubber. Polymers specified are those of styrene, α-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene and p-chlorostyrene, and the synthetic rubber may be a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or isobutylene, butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or an ethylene/propylene copolymer. Fillers disclosed are calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, talc, silica and metal alumina-silicates; the initiator is an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide, a perester or an azo compound and, preferably, is dicumyl peroxide or di-t-but peroxide. Optional ingredients are stabilizers, lubricants such as stearates, pigments and antioxidants, e.g. butylated phenol. The products may be formed into shaped articles.
