Abstract
A rigid, impact-resistant, age-resistant, thermoplastic composition comprises:- (a) 47 to 77 parts (by weight) of a rigid vinyl halide polymer; (b) 13 to 35 parts of a resinous copolymer of (i) styrene or nuclear or alpha substituted styrenes with (ii) 15 to 40 wt. per cent of a copolymerizable acrylonitrile containing less than 6 aliphatic carbon atoms; and (c) 10 to 18 parts of a rubbery polyurethane reaction product of an organic di- or tri-isocyanate and a hydroxy terminated polyol having a molecular weight of at least 500 and only -C-C- or -C-O- linkages in the molecular chain. The parts of (a)+(b)+(c) should total 100 ignoring pigments, stabilizers and other additives. Halide polymers specified are polyvinyl chloride, bromide, fluoride and iodide and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers. The copolymer (b) may be derived from styrene, 3,4-dichlorostyrene, dimethyl styrene, alpha methyl styrene, alpha methoxy styrene of 3,4-dichloroalphamethyl styrene and acrylonitrile or alpha halogen-or C1-4 alkyl-substituted acrylonitrile. The polyurethane (c) may be prepared from a hydroxy terminated polyester or polyether, e.g. poly(ethylene-propylene) adipate, poly(ethylenebutylene) sebacate, or polytetramethylene or polyethylene ether glycol and p,p1-disocyanato diphenyl methane, 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, naphthalene-1,5-diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The preferred blending technique is to dry blend the vinyl halide polymer with pigments and stabilizers; mill this blend into the copolymer at 300 DEG to 350 DEG C., and then to mill in the polyurethane at 200 DEG to 400 DEG C. Specification 694,978 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 844,240.
