Abstract

909,566. Heating and cooling by circulation of fluids; radiators for heating and cooling; bed warmers and coolers. YAT CHUEN YUEN, April 7, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 24438/59. Class 64 (2). [Also in Groups XXVI] Water or other liquid is heated or cooled in a closed casing 10 (according to whether an electric heater 12 or a refrigerating coil 13 is operated) and is passed by a pipe 17 to at least one heat exchanger 18 by means of a hand-rotated cylindrical body 27 to which the liquid returns through a pipe 19. The heat exchanger 18 may be of copper, aluminium alloy or stainless steel for use in rooms, roofs (e.g. of cars), refrigerators, cold stores, marine craft or aircraft (e.g. for melting ice on the exterior), or it may be of synthetic resin for use in windows, or of rubber or nylon for incorporation in a blanket, mat, cushion or an article of clothing. There may be fluid-filled closed passages 100, for withstanding external pressure, arranged around the edge of the heat exchanger 18 and extending between the loops of its continuous zig-zag liquid duct. The pump 27 is divided into two compartments 44, 45 and the upper compartment empties by gravity through the system into the lower compartment until the body is rotated about its axis through 180 degrees by means of a folding handle, Fig. 4 (not shown), to reverse the position of the compartments to restart the flow. The fixed inlet and outlet connections with which openings of the compartments 44, 45 register when the pump is operated are in the bearing of an axial spindle of the body 27 and there are internal tubes, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), interconnecting the compartments for venting of air from the lower compartment to the upper, one tube being closed at a time, by a ball valve, to prevent direct flow of attemperating liquid from the upper compartment to the lower. The liquid flow is controlled by a valve 25 and there are valves 20 by which the flow of refrigerant from a refrigerator 14 to the coil 13 may be shut off. The spindle of the handpump 27 may be supported in the headboard of a bed or settee, Fig. 5 (not shown), or in the back of a chair. The Provisional Specification describes also a system in which oil or gas is circulated and in which the circulating fluid is cooled by solid carbon dioxide packed in the casing. The heat exchanger may be formed with transverse ducts interconnecting flow and return pipes which extend along its longitudinal edges or be formed with a zig-zag duct with an outlet part extending along one side and it may be incorporated in a diving-suit.
