Abstract
909,527. Indicating liquid levels. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 18, 1961, No. 13956/61. Class 123 (1). [Also in Groups XII, XX and XXVIII] A sight glass mounting for example for the inspection of fluid flow in pipes, the level of liquids in vessels and the behaviour of combustible materials in enclosed spaces comprises a circular aperture whose diameter changes at A-A and B-B, thus providing two annular supporting surfaces against which windows 7 and 12 of glass or other transparent material are screwed by threaded clamping rings 5 and 10 respectively, cushion rings 6 and 11 being provided between each clamping ring and the window, and resilient jointing rings 8 and 13 between the window and each annular supporting surface. The cushion rings may be of compressed asbestos fibre. A thin film of protective transparent material may be inserted between the jointing ring 13 and the window 12 to prevent etching of the glass by the contained fluid. A bolted-on flanged clamping ring may be used in place of each of the threaded clamping rings should the diameter of the windows exceed about 7 inches. As shown, two sight glasses are provided at opposite sides of a pipe fitting for observing fluid flow therein.
