[Also in Group XXIX] In an hydraulic power transmission system comprising a variable-displacement pump 1 supplying a motor 6 driving a coiling drum 8 for a web 9 small adjustments to the torque output of the motor to maintain constant tension in the web are effected by a valve 16 actuated by a jockey pull 11 and arranged to connect the inlet 5 and exhaust 7 of the motor to the delivery and exhaust conduits 17a, 21 respectively of an auxiliary pressure source to increase the torque and to make reverse connections to reduce the torque. Large deflections of the valve 16, giving rise to large flows in conduits 13, 14 provided with restrictions 51, 52, cause deflection of a diaphragm assembly 49, 50 to operate one of a pair of electric switches 46, 47 to cause operation of a solenoid-actuated valve 34 in such direction as to cause movement of a servo piston 28 in a direction to adjust the displacement of the pump 1 to change the torque of the motor 6 such that the valve 16 is returned to neutral position. The switches 46, 47 have holding magnets 53 to provide snap action. In a modification, a flow-responsive meter driving an electric generator to energize a solenoid-actuated switch in response to flow in either direction in the conduit 14 takes the place of the restrictions 51, 52, diaphragms 49, 50 &c. Which of the two solenoids 39, 40 is energized is selected by a further switch in accordance with the direction of displacement of the valve 16. In a further modification, means for measuring flow in the conduits 13, 14 are dispensed with and the valve 34 is actuated in accordance with the magnitude and sense of an error between a speed signal from an electric generator driven by the motor 6 and a signal from a rheostat connected to the displacement adjusting means of the pump 1. Instead of the jockey roller acting directly on the valve 16 it may act through a strain gauge &c. and an electric amplifier.
