Abstract
909,143. Rockets. MARXEN, F. Feb. 5, 1960 [Feb. 13, 1959], No. 4256/60. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A rocket for spraying oil over the sea through ports 9 has fins 14 so inclined that the rocket is caused to rotate during flight. A chamber 7 within the rocket is filled with oil through an opening in the nose closed by a plug 4 and the apertures 9 are normally closed by metal foils 10. Strikers 11 aligned with the apertures are seated in branches of a tube 12, which has a stem containing black powder. The stem supports the forward end of the propellant charge 13, which extends through a spacer ring 15. Shortly before the charge 13 burns out, it ignites the black powder, the gases from which force the strikers through the foils and so release the oil. Instead of the foils 10, stoppers, which are thrown out by centrifugal force, may close the apertures 9. In Fig. 3 the apertures are closed by plates so connected to pivoted fins 14 that, as the fins move from the storage to the operative position, the plates 19 rotate and expose the apertures. In Fig. 5, the apertures 9 are closed by slides 20 connected to a bowed member 21 slidable in a slot 22. A piston stressed by a spring 23 holds the member in the closure position until thrust forward by the gases from the propellant 13. The apertures may be in the tail and closed before firing by claws attached to the barrel of a launching pistol. The launching tube itself may be used to close the apertures. Six rockets may be assembled in guide tubes 18 to form a magazine, which may be inserted in a firing stand 32, 33 provided with ignition leads 27, 28 and a sighting device 30. The stand has a counterweight 35 and a safety-belt 34.
