Abstract

A filler material having an artificial mother of pearl lustre comprises translucent particles of flake- or sponge-like structure wherein the particles consist of crystalline oxide and/or hydroxide of a trivalent metal and/or oxide and/or hydroxide of a metal having a valency higher than three, the thickness of the particles being from 1/10 up to ten light wavelengths and the refractive index of the crystalline particles being greater p than 1,60. At least a portion of the particles may consist of several particles of alternatively higher and lower refractive index lying on one another, the higher refractive index particles may be oxides of titanium, iron, lead, tin, thorium and/or zirconium while those of lower index may be silica. The filler material may be embedded in vitreous, synthetic plastic pasty varnish or ointment-like material. The material may be made by wetting a carrier of solid material, e.g. glass, ceramic, metal or plastic, with a solution of a metal or metalloid to form a film of liquid, converting this film to a layer of oxide and-or hydroxide by heating and then breaking up this layer into particles. The carrier may be coated with a non-stick material which decomposes on heating, while the oxide and/or hydroxide layer may be broken up by bending or shaking the carrier which may be in the form of a band or foil. An endless conveyer belt may be used for the process, the belt passing consecutively through a non-stick solution, a heating zone to solidify this, a solution of a hydrolysable metal or metalloid compound, a heating zone, a vacuum chamber and a cleaning apparatus for the belt. The belt may pass through several different solutions of hydrolysable compounds each being followed by a heating zone.
