Abstract

909,026. Spinning tubes. LE FIELL, C. K. Aug. 14, 1961, No. 29299/61. Class 83 (4). In a machine for spinning tubes and other cylindrical articles, the tube is rotated while encircled by a rotatably mounted annular forming means, back-up means are mounted for engagement with the tube on both sides of the forming means and the back-up means and forming means are movable in opposition to each other in a direction transverse to the axis of the tube. The tube T is held in a chuck 12 and a carriage 13 is movable along rails 10 and 11 by a screw 14. Within the carriage standards 17 and 18 on opposite sides of the tube are movable towards or away from each other by screws 19 and 20 with both left and right-hand threaded portions operated through gears 21 and 22 by a hand wheel 24. Standards 17 carry a pin 25, Fig. 3, on which is mounted a holder 26 for a forming ring 29 while standards 18 carry a pin 31 on which are mounted holders 32, 33 for back-up rings 34, 35 arranged one on each side of the former ring. The holder 33 is mounted on an eccentric portion 39 of the pin 31 so that the back-up rings can be relatively adjusted by rotating the pin. In order to ensure that the back-up rings exert equal pressure on the work, regardless of the taper, the standards 18 may carry an equalizing lever connected at its ends to the holders 32, 33. In a modification, Fig. 8, all the ring holders 26a, 32a and 33a have pin and slot connections with their standards 17, 18 and within the limits so allowed are movable by hydraulic or pneumatic piston devices 40, 42 and 43 mounted on the carriage 13. In a further modification the machine is made automatic by operating the gears 21, 22 by a motor controlled by a tracer following the edge of a template. If necessary a mandrel may be inserted within the tube.
