Abstract

A method of cleaning metal wires or strips comprises passing the wire or strip through a mass of abrasive particles maintained in a state of agitation and flowing a degreasing liquid through the particles in contact with the wire or strip. The abrasive particles, e.g. alumina, sharp sand, granite chips, or aluminium silicide of 23/25 mesh, may be supported on a gauze in a vertical elongated vessel having an electromagnetic vibrator attached to a wall, the gauze having an aperture for the passage of the wire or strip in an upward direction while a degreasing liquid, e.g. xylene, white spirit, trimethylbenzenes, or tetramethyl benzenes, is flowed downwardly in counter current to the wire or strip. The degreasing liquid may be recycled by a pump through a filter and the vessel may be provided with a gland to allow the wire or strip to enter the vessel but prevent leakage of the liquid.ALSO:A method of cleaning metal wires or strips comprises passing the wire or strip through a mass of abrasive particles maintained in a state of agitation and flowing a degreasing liquid through the particles in contact with the wire or strip.
