Abstract

The invention comprises 18b -acetoxy-10,17a -dimethoxy - 16b - methoxycarbonyl-3-oxo-2,3-seco-20a -yohimbane, 18b - hydroxy-10,17a -dimethoxy-16b -carboxy-3-oxo - 2,3 - seco - 20a -yohimbane and the corresponding lactone, together with a process for their preparation by condensing 5-methoxytryptamine with an ester of 1b -carboxymethyl-2b -methoxycarbonyl-3a -methoxy-4b -acetoxy-6b -formyl cyclohexane in an inert solvent, alkali metal borohydride reduction of the resulting 18b -acetoxy-10,17a -dimethoxy - 16b - methoxycarbonyl-3-oxo-2,3-3,4-diseco-D 4(21) -20a -yohimbene 3-oic acid to give 18b - acetoxy - 10,17a - dimethoxy - 16b - methoxycarbonyl - 3 - oxo-2,3-seco-20a -yohimbane, which may then be saponified to the 18b - hydroxy - 16b - carboxy compound and lactonised, e.g. with acetic anhydride and lithium acetate.
