Abstract
A fluid composition for coating tablets consists essentially of 10-25 grms. by weight of a water-soluble wax as hereinafter defined, 5-12 grms. by weight of a polymeric substance comprising a polyalkylmethacrylate, a copolymer of an alkyl acrylate with an alkylmethacrylate or a copolymer of an alkylmethacrylate with methacrylic acid, the alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, together with a non-aqueous solvent to a volume of 100 ml. of the ultimate composition. The wax is a water-soluble polyethylene glycol of melting point of at least 50 DEG C., glyceryl monostearate, diglycol stearate, and mixtures thereof. Optional ingredients are (a) dyes, lakes and pigments (b) water-insoluble glossing and polishing agents, e.g. beeswax, lanolin, stearic acid, cocoa butter and cetyl alcohol (c) plasticizers such as castor oil, mineral oil, corn oil, sesane oil and propylene glycol, alone or in admixture with a drying oil such as soya bean oil (d) surface-active agents, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan derivatives and sulphated fatty alcohols (e) vinyl stearate (antisticking agent). Specifications 762,229 and 764,342 are referred to.ALSO:A coated solid medicament has the coating material in the form of a physiologically acceptable composition consisting essentially of a water-permeable combination of a water-soluble or water dispersible wax (A) and a film-forming "plastic" which is a polymer of an alkylmethacrylate a copolymer of an alkyl acrylate with an alkyl methacrylate or a copolymer of an alkylmethacrylate with methacrylic acid, the said alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms (B). The copolymers contain 70 to 95% of the acrylate or methacrylate. The waxes are polyethylene glycols of melting point at least 50 DEG C., glyceryl monostearate and diglycol stearate, or mixtures thereof. Optional ingredients are (a) dyes, lakes and pigments; (b) water-insoluble glossing and polishing agents such as beeswax, lanolin, stearic acid, cocoa butter and cetyl alcohol (C); (c) plasticizers such as castor oil, mineral oil, corn oil, sesame oil and propylene glycol, alone or in admixture with a drying oil such as soy bean oil (D); (d) surface-active agents such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan derivatives and sulphated fatty alcohols; and (e) an anti-sticking agent which is vinyl stearate. The compositions contain 10 to 25 grms. of (A), 5 to 12 grms. of (B), not more than 1 grm. of (C) and not more than 2 grms. of (D) per 100 ml. of the fluid composition which is prepared by dissolving the components in a non-aqueous solvent such as acetone, ethanol, or mixtures thereof, methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate. The finished coat contains 45 to 83% of (A) and 17 to 55% of (B) and not more than 5% of the optional components. Specifications 762,229 and 764,342 are referred to.
