Abstract

907,293. Moulding plastic housings for lighting units &c. GERHARDI & CIE. Jan. 13, 1959 [July 26, 1958], No. 1277/59. Class 87(2). A trough-shaped body, e.g. a transparent housing for a long field lighting unit, is formed from a blank of plastic material having a varying amount of material in the zones where a small or large amount is required during the pressing of the housing so that it has a uniform wall thickness. A blank 6 of polymethacrylate is formed with narrow edges 4 and a lower bulge 2a and is clamped by the edges 4 on a mould 18, 19 by a cover 20 having an inlet 21. Pressure fluid is then applied and a troughshaped body 22 having a projection 23 and a uniform wall thickness is formed. The blank with the required strengthened &c. portions may be produced by extrusion or injection or by a pressing, casting, or centrifugal casting operation. After extrusion, the plastic material may be acted upon by press members, heaters or profiled rollers to produce the required deformations in the blank. In one example polymethacrylate is extruded from nozzle 26 in a plastic state from 27 to 28 and in this period is acted on by eccentrically mounted rollers 29, 30 which form sections 40 of thinner cross-section. The extrusion opening may be periodically varied to produce the deformation. Other suitable thermoplastic substances are stated to be polyester resins, methacrylic resins and polypropylene. The blank 6 may be reinforced with textile fibres, metal wires or glass.
