Abstract
Pigmentary alkaline earth metal silicates are prepared by forming an aqueous solution from an alkali metal silicate, a free acid and a water soluble alkaline earth metal salt, e.g. by merging a stream of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate with a stream of an aqueous solution of an acid and an alkaline earth metal salt, so that the mixed solution contains 0,6 to 1,4 moles of acid per mole of alkali metal silicate and at least sufficient alkaline earth metal salt to react with alkali metal silicate not reacted with the acid, immediately subjecting the mixed solutions to sudden violent agitation of brief duration and then discontinuing the agitation and allowing the alkaline earth metal silicate to precipitate. The agitation is for less than 1 second, preferably from 0,001 to 0,1 of a second, and may be effected by introducing the two streams into the central area of a centrifugal pump where they are mixed violently and discharged from the pump into a vessel where precipitation occurs. The agitation may also be effected by passing the streams at high flow rates into the arms of a T-tube and discharging the mixture from the leg. In the examples pigments are prepared from sodium silicate, hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride, and are beaten with bleached kraft pulp which is formed into sheets of paper. Other acids mentioned are nitric, nitrous, sulphuric, sulphurous, carbonic, phosphoric, acetic, formic and chloroacetic acids.
