907,050. Making waveguides; coiling helices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 13, 1960, No. 31508/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of coiling wire 15, Fig. 1, on a rotating mandrel 9 for making helical waveguides in which the formed coil is continuously fed forwards over and off the mandrel during the application of a binding agent &c, the frictional resistance between the wire and mandrel is overcome by dividing the mandrel into a plurality of longitudinally reciprocated members 8. In one example, the forward ends of each member 8 are consecutively moved radially inwards out of contact with the wire during a short period in which the members 8 are moved in the opposite direction to the formed coil. The members 8 are carried at one end by spigots 7 inserted in radial slots 5, Fig. 2, of a rotating carrier 6 and at the radially movable end have pins 10 extending through a similar carrier 4 into a cam groove 11 of a fixed plate 12. The groove 11 is circular over the major portion which is of sufficient depth to permit the members 8 to move forward bodily with the wire coil. Over the limited region 17, Fig. 4, groove 11 is flat to cause radial retraction and has a projection in the base which forces the pin 10 and member 8 back to their original positions. In a modification the members 8 may be mounted on pins similar to the pins 10 at each end, those at the rear end running in grooves with varying depths so that the members 8 are forced forward with the coil during the major part of each revolution and are free to be forced back in turn. The members 8 may alternatively be moved by electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means. In making helical waveguides the coil while on the mandrel 9 has binding agents applied such as those requiring evaporation of a solvent carrier or thermosetting, thermoplastic or epoxy resin mixtures, air or water cooling being applied to reduce the time necessary for the coil to remain on the mandrel. The coil may also be sprayed with metal or alloys at low temperature and have cotton tapes, steel armouring or bonded fibre glass applied whilst supported by the mandrel 9.
