Abstract

906,831. Making electrical conductors. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Nov. 16, 1959, No. 38814/59. Class 83 (2). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] A flat-strip conductor, especially suitable for electrical coils, is formed by folding over the burred edges of a cut strip of metal to form rounded edges which, together with at least a part of the non-folded outer surface, are provided with an insulating covering. The preferred conductor comprises an aluminium foil strip with a coating formed by anodizing after folding, the coating extending around both edges and continuing across the unfolded outer surface. It may be formed by feeding the cut strip from a roll 30 through folding rolls 31 which fold the edges inwards and then through an ironing roll (not shown) which flattens the folded strip. It is then fed over guide roller 32 which directs it into tight engagement with an electrolytic roller 33 rotating in an electrolytic bath 34 containing e.g. a 15-18% aqueous solution of sulphuric acid. The roller 33 has a specially formed and partly masked surface (Fig. 7 and 8, not shown) so that only that part of the conductor which is to be anodized is in contact with the solution, and a plurality of suitably shaped cathodes 36 are provided. Suitable current densities and treatment times are given in the Specification. The strip then passes through a rinsing tank 51, a hot water sealing tank 52, and a pressurized-steam-sealing container 53, being finally fed by drive rolls 54 on to a storage spool 55.
