A valve-actuating mechanism comprises an annular pulley 1 rotatable within a housing 2 and threadedly mounted upon a core 11 which is constrained-eg. by a splined engagement 13, 14 with the housing- to move axially to actuate the valve on rotation of the pulley, the reaction on the pulley being taken by a pair of co-operating annular bearing surfaces 21, 22 of anti-friction material such as polytetrafluoroethylene. A pull cord 16 wrapped on the pulley extends out of the housing through a conduit 18. The body 2 is rotatable in a nut 5 adapted to be fixed to the valve body so that the cord 16 can be operated at any angle. The pull cord 16 has a ball at its extremity fixed thereto which occupies a slot in the pulley so that, on operation of the device, the cord becomes detached from the mechanism, rotation of the pulley being restricted to slightly under one complete revolution by a stop.
