Abstract
906,644. Separating liquids from gases. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLER GES. HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. Jan. 26, 1959, No. 2827/59. Class 123 (3). In a smooth-flow device for separating liquids from supersaturated gases flowing at high speeds and pressures and comprising three transverse rows of equally-spaced baffles 2 which extend from top to bottom of an open-ended longitudinally-arranged housing 1, each baffle, formed from a sheet of corrosion-resistant metal, comprises a forward planar portion which is located in a plane inclined at an acute angle α to the direction of gas flow x and a rearward liquid-collecting pocket 3 which is constructed by bending the rear end of the sheet back upon itself, a narrow vertical slot 4 being provided between the rear edge of the planar portion and the folded back edge 3a of the metal sheet. The pockets 3 in each row of baffles 3 extend over a transverse cut-out portion 6 which is formed in a bottom wall 1a of the housing and has an inclined wall 6B extending downwardly from its front edge to direct liquid, falling from the pockets 3, to a corresponding collecting chamber 7 located beneath the wall 1a. Strips 8 arranged across the interior surfaces of the housing 1 prevent liquid from moving longitudinally along the housing walls. As shown in Fig. 2, adjacent rows of baffles have their planar portions inclined to one another. The angle of inclination α of the planar portions is chosen to vary inversely with the speed of the gas which also influences the number of rows of baffles to be employed. Various shapes of baffles are described, the baffle, Fig. 5, being provided, along its front edge, with a second planar portion 5 which is adapted to extend into a low-pressure area immediately behind the corresponding pocket 3 of a preceding row of baffles.
