In order to permit adjustment of an optical instrument in three orthogonal directions by means of one hand, the instrument 1 is supported on a column 2 on a base 3 which contacts a table 4 by means of a spherical surface 5 and balls 6 so as to be movable thereover by operation of a hollow handle 7 and within the latter is a shaft 9 with an external knob 8, the shaft being geared to a screw-shaft 13 so that by rotating knob 8 the instrument 1 can move vertically. In an alternative, the screw-shaft 13 is operated by a reversible electric motor in base 3, the motor being energized through a fiveway switch in the handle, this switch being closed by an external switch lever.
