Abstract

906,462. Disintegrating bales of paper pulp &C. COURTAULDS Ltd. Feb. 1, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 3615/60. Class 96. [Also in Groups IX and XVII] A method of breaking down a bale of compressed particulate or fibrous material, e.g. wood pulp or sawdust, for use in the cellulose industry, comprises twisting one portion of the bale relative to a second portion. The bale 1 is intermittently forwarded by a pusher 17 through a fixed rectangular die 2 and through a second die 3 mounted for rotation about an axis of the bale by means of guiding rollers 5, 8, 23, 24. The pusher is moved by hydraulic means until a striker 19 contacts one of a series of switches 11-15, it then stops while hydraulic piston-and cylinder assemblies 6, 7 are operated to rotate the die 3 to twist off part of the bale. The die is then returned to its initial position and piston 17 moves forward to contact a further switch. The operation of a bale rotating means and advancing means may be carried out manually. The bales may be of irregular cross-section, in which case the dies 2, 3 may be replaced by adjustable clamping jaws.
