Abstract

To break up entire fibre bales into individual fibres or small fibre flakes, a fibre bale (1) is moved continuously by a conveyor band (3) towards groups of moving fibre-opening tools (6, 7) which, during the advance of the bale, make a number of vertical parallel grooves in the surface (2) of the fibre bale located at the front in the direction of movement. The fibre-opening tools are individual tools cooperating with one another in pairs and having differently pointed fibre-stripping tips, a tool which has a relatively acute-angled stripping tip making a relatively narrow groove in the said surface of the fibre bale. This is followed continuously in the work cycle by a tool having a relatively obtuse-angled stripping tip which widens the narrow groove made previously and, at the same time, removes further fibre material from the surface of the fibre bale located at the front, the groove walls being broken down. The break down of the groove walls is assisted by the mutual offsetting of successive tools. <IMAGE>
