Abstract

An injectable aqueous solution comprises per ml., an effective amount of up to about 0.1 grm. of a benzothiadiazine-1 : 1-dioxide diuretic and about 10 to 40% by weight (of the total) of at least one water-soluble N-substituted amide, the solution being buffered to a pH of about 4 to 7. Optionally, 4-amino-6-chloro-benzene-1 : 3-disulphonamide may be added as stabilizing agent. The diuretics (which may be in the form of their therapeutically useful salts, e.g. those with alkali metals) may be those of general formula <FORM:0906399/VI/1> wherein R1 represents hydrogen, alkyl, halogeno-alkyl, cycloalkyl, monocyclic aryl or monocyclic aryl alkyl; R21, R211 and R2111 represent hydrogen, alkyl or aralkyl and R3 represents halogen, methyl or halogeno-alkyl, e.g. trifluoromethyl, examples being 6-chloro-7-sulphamyl - 3 : 4 - dihydro - [1 : 2 : 4] - benzothiadiazine - 1 : 1 - dioxide and 6 - chloro - 3 - methyl - 7 - sulphamyl - 3 : 4 - dihydro - [1 : 2 : 4]-benzothiadiazine - 1 : 1 - dioxide. The corresponding compounds which contain a C=N double bond in the 3 : 4- or 2 : 3-position are included. Preferred amides are the N-lower (C1-8) alkyl- or N,N-di-lower (C1-8) alkyl amides of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids containing up to 8 carbon atoms, e.g. lower fatty acids and the corresponding halogenated or hydroxylated compounds. Other substituted amides mentioned are those of polye.g. di-carboxylic acids particularly lower alkenyl or alkylene dicarboxylic acids containing up to 4 carbon atoms in the alkenyl or alkylene chain, di- and tetrasubstituted ureas, thioureas, amides of benzene mono- and dicarboxylic acids, e.g. phthalamides, isophthalamides and terephthalamides, N-lower alkylated xanthines and N-substituted amide polymers, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidene. The amide group may also be substituted by other aliphatic groups, e.g. b -hydroxyethyl or b -chloroethyl or by aromatic groups, e.g. phenyl, tolyl, chlorophenyl. Antioxidants may also be present.
