Abstract

1436230 Luminescent materials and uses thereof GES FUER KERNFORSCHUNG mbH 22 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 29767/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division D1] A method of connecting radiation of frequency higher than that of visible light to radiation in the visible range comprises utilizing a compound wherein X are each independently N-R<SP>11</SP>, O or S, R are a phenyl, tolyl or anisyl radical, or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the substituents R being identical, and R<SP>11</SP> are each independently a hydrogen atom or any R; R being as specified above and R<SP>1</SP> are each independently a hydrogen atom or a methyl or methoxy radical wherein X are each independently N-R<SP>11</SP> or S and R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are as specified above; or wherein X are each independently N-R<SP>11</SP> or S when n is 2, 3 or 4 and X is O when n is 3 or 4, R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> being as specified above. The symmetrical compounds are produced by the reaction of desylamine hydrochlorides or desylaniline hydrochlorides with dicarbonic acid dichloride or its phenylene analogues to generate a N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-desyldicarbonic acid diamide which is then condensed with phosphorpentachloride, phosphorpentasulphide or a mixture of ammonium acetate and glacial acetic acid. A 0À05 molar solution in toluene may be used for liquid scintillation. The products may be incorporated into filaments of nylon 6, 66 or polyethylene terephthalate by addition to the melt before spinning. The products may be contained in washing agents and detergents and used to whiten paper, cotton, wool and nylon.
