Abstract

906,105. Supporting and mounting bearings. PITNER, A., and ROULEMENTS A AIGUILLERS S.A. DES. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5887/59. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In a method of mounting a bearing R, Fig. 4, in the housing 1 of a member P and around a journal T whose axial position relative to the member P must be obtained within a specified tolerance, a supporting face 9 is provided in the member P and is situated a known axial distance from the housing 1, and the bearing, having a face 8, axially abuts an end face 7 of the journal T and, while the journal and member P are maintained in their final relative position, a dish-like member E is deformed so that it is trapped between the supporting face 9 and the bearing R and so holds the latter against the journal T. The member E is made from ductile material and is deformed by a roller &c. 17 so that it extends to the face 9 and serves as an abutment member between the member P and the bearing R. In a modification, Fig. 5, the member E<SP>1</SP> solely abuts the journal T<SP>1</SP> and the bearing 5a holds a seal 21 against a shoulder 21a on the journal T<SP>1</SP>. In another arrangement, the member E has curved ends which are forced open and enter recesses in the member P; alternatively, the member E is castellated or consists of a number of pieces. During the deformation of the member E, the member P and/or the member T are also deformed, e.g. by pressure or heat, in order to provide clearance between the axial abutment faces. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, applied to a Cardan joint, the joint has four journals T incorporating the above method of mounting. Each journal is held in a branch of a fork M<SP>1</SP> or M<SP>2</SP> which corresponds to the member P in Fig. 4 and each branch is temporarily deformed by a lever 30 pivotably mounted at 31 in a recess 32 in a plate 25. The lever 30, having a circular shoulder 33, bears against the branch of the fork, and at the opposite end of the lever a stud 34 is adjusted to engage a cam 35, which being screw-threaded on to a spigot 36 on the plate 25, is screwed inwards to deform the fork-branch. At this stage the member E is deformed by the roller 17, which is applied through an aperture 33a in the lever 30.
