905,473. Expanded metal. HEAT PUMP & REFRIGERATION Ltd. May 11, 1961 [May 18, 1960; Nov. 23, 1960], Nos. 17617/60 and 40329/60. Class 45. [Also in Group XXVI] In a pump for liquids or finely divided solids or a blower or fan for air or other gases, the impeller comprises a cylinder 4 made of expanded metal sheet secured within annular grooves formed in a support disc and a reinforcing ring 6, as by adhesive bonding, brazing or soldering. The two ends of the sheet are butted together and may be fastened together by adhesive bonding, brazing, soldering or welding or left unfastened. The strands of the expanded metal, being tilted at an angle to the surface of the material, act as impeller blades. Instead of being parallel to the impeller axis, the major diagonal of each diamond-shaped aperture of the material may be positioned helically of the cylinder 4 to impart an axial component of flow. In a modification, the expanded metal cylinder is force-fitted on to a flanged support disc so that the latter lies in the middle of the cylinder. The edge of the cylinder is turned inwardly to reinforce it. The impeller may be of conical or part-spherical instead of cylindrical form. The expanded metal may be coated with a plastics composition.
