Abstract
905,401. Automatic fluid level control systems. BURNDEPT Ltd. July 15, 1960 [July 18, 1959], No. 24509/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XVIII and XIX] Apparatus for detecting the presence or absence of a liquid 2 at a particular level in a tank 1 consists of a source 3 of beta radiation, e.g. strontium 90, disposed within the tank at that level, a target 6 which, in a steel tank, may be the wall thereof, but which, when the tank is made of a metal of low atomic number, e.g. aluminium, consists of a patch of lead or tungsten on the inner surface thereof and a detector 7 of gamma radiation which is emitted from the target as the beta rays are arrested therein. The detector 7 may be a Geiger counter or, as shown, a scintillating phosphor and a scintillation counter 8 which may include a photo multiplier. The output of the detector is applied through an amplifier 9 and a discriminator 11 to a rate meter 12 which may trigger a circuit 13 controlling an audible or visible indicator or the operation of a supply valve to the tank. In operation, when the level of liquid is below the line joining the source 3 to the target 6, a proportion of the abundance of gamma rays produced in the target impinge on the detector. When the level rises so far that the liquid 2 is interposed between the source and the target a much less intensity of gamma rays is produced in the liquid and the large diminution in gamma radiation received by the detector gives rise to the warning or controlling signal. The apparatus may also be used to detect flaws in a coated sheet, the source 3 and detector 7 being moved together along opposite sides thereof.
